Random Learnings #9

Yesterday (July 28, 2023), a threatening storm went through Central Iowa. The storm had everything: winds, lightening, ominous clouds, rain potential, and storm warnings. Coralville was hosting fifty thousand RAGBRAI bicyclists on their last overnight before completing the 50th annual event.

My wife and I were in Iowa City to visit my mother and were at our hotel when the weather sirens went off. The hotel made an announcement that we should proceed to the lobby or basement, which we did.

We discovered that the elevators were disabled and we had to take the stairs. What we learned is that the elevators are disabled once the sirens go off. I have never heard of that before: sure, you don’t take elevators during a fire, but a storm? And a storm that was more menacing than damaging (at least where we were). Never knew ….
