After today’s Fulham 0-4 Manchester City at Craven Cottage, Man City is two wins away from an unprecedented four straight first division titles in England. It’s simply never been done before.
When I first heard this, I wondered Has any football club won four straight titles below First Division?
With the promotion/relegation system used in English football and throughout the rest of Europe, the answer is Duh. No, you idiot! With few exceptions, such as your stadium isn’t large enough or the club doesn’t have a license, clubs are promoted to the next level in the football pyramid, making it impossible to even win two years running.
Theoretically a club could win in successive promotions, but seems unlikely: teams promoted to the Premier League often struggle to not be immediately relegated, much less winning the title.
So, as far as I know, the record number of successive league titles is 3, which Manchester City has a good chance to best.
