I knew that China joined the United Nations at Taiwan’s expense – China also getting the permanent seat on the security council – but didn’t know why or how it came abount.
From the Britannica Book of the Year 1972 (p78):
On October 25, 1971, Albania stood in the limelight of the world scene when its resolution to admit China to the UN and expel Taiwan was accepted by 76 votes to 35 with 17 abstentions.
I’m sure there’s a lot more back-room politicking among the communist countries, but I doubt that Albania has played a bigger role on the world stage than Resolution 2758.
