Berlin obviously is a city steeped in history: everywhere you look you’ll see a marker, monument, building, or something else that’s meaningful. I doubt anyone is surprised.
However, this street sign surprised me. The March 2020 opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport immediately closed Berlin Schönfeld Airport, as Berlin Brandenburg was built just to the south and shared a runway.
[The Schönfeld terminal was suppose to remain open for future traffic expansion, which was canceled after COVID pandemic decimated air travel.]
Berlin Tegel Airport remained open for passenger service until November 2020 but unlikely there was much as flights were transitioned to Brandenburg even as the pandemic gripped the world. The other Berlin airport, Berlin Templehof, was shuttered in 2008 with the assumption that Brandenburg’s opening was in the near future (originally planned for October 2011, whoops).
I wonder how these signs are still around almost 5 years after Brandenburg opened and 4 years after Tegel closed. Obviously the Tegel sign is worn and almost unreadable, but should be a minor effort to remove and reduce confusion …. wouldn’t you want a sign to your new shiny airport? Go figure.
