Hitler’s Chancellery Lives!

Perhaps. In Berlin it’s difficult to tell original vs. renovated, truth from myth. Chunks of the Berlin Wall are still for sell, 35 years after the wall fell. Is it real or is it Memorex?

According to our Berlin guide, Robert, the Mohrenstraße U-Bahn station is adorned with marble from Hitler’s Reichkanzlei, salvaged from the chancellery’s remains after World War II. After the war, Berliners salvaged whatever possible to provide materials to rebuild the city, mostly Trümmerfrauen as there were few men.

However, the truthiness of the marble’s origin has been questioned. The GDR stated that the marble came from Thuringia, and Wikipedia agrees. As with most post-war Berlin history, it’s unlikely to ever be unequivocal one way or the other, as facts are both fluid and tough to come by.

Supposedly there are plans to rename Mohrenstraße to Glinkastraße , though four years later nothing has happened. Regardless, we were there!
