Memories of Mom #34

Mom wore glasses or contacts for my entire life: pictures of her as a teen or young mother show her in groovy, hip, fashionable glasses. I do not know when she started wearing contacts, but it seems to me that she preferred them as I rarely saw her in glasses in recent years. That said, I never saw her regularly; my siblings might know otherwise.

One spring or summer afternoon, standing on the porch of Zena’s, our first rental house in Green Island, Mom noticed her right contact missing and thought it had popped out. Mom had us back off carefully to create a search radius, and then started looking/feeling around for it. No luck. Mom didn’t seem too upset, though I expect that replacing it would use money she didn’t have.

Hours later, the contact was in fact found: it had rolled under her eyelid! She was relieved, disaster adverted, life goes on.
