Functional Art

I recently traveled to Oslo, Norway to speak at a tech conference, staying at the Clarion Hotel The Hub opposite Oslo Central Train Station. Traveling internationally keeps your mind sharp as you start noticing differences or unusual aspects of wherever you’re visiting, and this trip was no different.

Abstract art? Secret messages? Thematic decorations? These panels are seen throughout my hotel. I just couldn’t decide what purpose, if any, the panels were for.

A panel consists of 44 circles: a raised, solid semi-circle and a lower, angled semi-circle. Their positioning differs from panel to panel, and in fact are moveable.

The answer: vent covers! And rather ingenious, individually adjustable vents which can target different areas with different levels of airflow. Much more useful that most vents which are often an all-or-nothing affair.

That explanation notwithstanding, seems like this could be very useful to spies!
