Kraków Building Signs

You’ll notice these extending from buildings throughout KrakówPoland: triangular, metal signs with the building number prominent and the street name at the top or bottom. They contain lights to make them visible at nights.

Most, but not all, buildings appear to have this, perhaps more so in tourist areas but I didn’t analyze comprehensively. Some are old and brittle while others are newer or at least better maintained.

A straight Google did not find anything, however ChatGPT suggests that this may be the Austrian influence during the partitions of Poland or mid-20th Communist regulations that street signs be visible at night.

[In case you’re wondering, I asked ChatGPT In Krakow I noticed that many buildings had a triangular, metal address sign which has the building number and street name in metal with a light behind it to illuminate it at night. Architecturally interesting, but I’d like to know the history of these signs.]

Regardless, an interesting architectural detail.
