Meandering Thoughts #59

I am wondering why anyone pays for monitoring themselves for identity theft.

Today I completed an application for free identity monitoring sponsored by a company whose systems were breached and data stolen in January 2025. Three such data breaches in the last four years where my personal data may have been stolen has led to almost continuous identity monitoring, the most recent covering me through 2027.

Data breaches occur all-too-often, leaving the breached companies at risk of lawsuits, financial penalties, and image damage. Many possible targets, security seemingly lower priority than convenience, I fully expect my personal data to be potentially stolen and additional free monitoring to be given. Pay for it? Nah, just wait a little bit longer!
