Fall 1967, 2½ year-old me playing outside at my grandparents’ house in Westport, CT. In the background, the family Volkswagen Bug that transported us from our Manhattan apartment. I’m sitting on the Art Linkletter-approved Gym-Dandy Surrey!

The “surrey” is a quadracycle that could seat 1-2 people in front of whomever pedaled. The driveway was long enough to reach breakneck speeds: I remember my uncle pedaling furiously as I held on for dear life, joyous screams of laughter. When I got older, I would pedal with my sister in front, attempting to reach speeds achieved by my uncle. I do not remember the canopy, but the surrey brings back childhood memories and was a beloved member of the family until its demise (did it fall apart? disposed of when the house was sold? don’t know).
While internet searches find multiple Gym-Dandy’s, that Gym-Dandy no longer exists. And Art Linkletter’s name would draw a blank stare aside from the fact his sold his name for the Gym-Dandy Surrey.
