Security Through Stupidity

What problems can you identify?

You’ve announced to the world that:

  • Legacy PIN codes are either 4- or 5-digits long; now they are all 6-digits long;
  • All PIN codes end in zero (either “00” or “0”);
  • A “package room” is where deliveries are made (and like other “packages” are stored);
  • One PIN gets you into two separate, secured areas.

Truly I get it: building management realizes that longer PIN codes are more secure, but really? How about something a little less known like “Add either the first or the first two digits of your existing PIN code to create your new 6-digit PIN code.” Or “Sorry for the inconvenience, but please contact building management for your new PIN code.” As it stands, security has not been improved one iota. Just saying ….
