Meandering Thoughts #66

Why do people automatically assume their religion is your religion?

An Afro-American man and his family stopped my house, desiring my time to read Bible verses to (with?) me. No “Do you have time?” No “Would you be interested?” No “Are you Christian?” No “Do you believe in a higher being?” Assumed I believed in God, assumed I believed in his God, and assumed that an injection of religious drivel into my life was required.

In today’s culturally diverse world, where each neighbor may practice a different religion- Jewish, Muslim, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, etc. – to automatically presume Catholicism is presumptuous, judgmental, rude, idiotic, small-minded, stupid….and totally expected from those who believe that daily they need to convert the heathens.

I told him, truthfully and with conviction, that I am a life-long, die-hard atheist, though perhaps claiming the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster as my one and only religion my religion would have been more entertaining! I definitely need to remember that for my next encounter.
