Meandering Thoughts #68

A car parked on a steep incline in Trieste, Italy.

I was taught to turn your front tires when parking on a hill: downhill towards the curb, uphill away from the curb. It’s your last-grasp protection if all else fails, and fortunately I’ve never had to put theory into practice.

Initially I thought this cute but later question its effectiveness as a wheel block:

  • not tall, easy for the tire to roll over;
  • (somewhat) smooth rock against (somewhat) smooth pavement, likely to slide and not grip.

This technique would definitely not work for larger, heavier vehicles, but perhaps ok for passenger vehicles even if not a wedge shape. I didn’t bother to see the orientation of the front wheels, so perhaps this is yet another redundancy against catastrophe and unlike to ever come into play. Hopefully it’s not the only redundancy against an out-of-control vehicle rolling down the hill!
