Recently my ADSB feeder received traffic from 300 nautical miles away, my personal record by at least 35 nautical miles. Today’s FlightRadar24 feeder recorded ADS-B traffic from 302 nautical miles away. Wow.
The direction – almost directly northeast – is perhaps more surprising, which is 50nm past Thunder Bay, Canada. Previously, southeast has been the direction for the daily max distance, today’s northeast record exceeding the weekly max from the northeast by over 30%.
I am not an antenna whisperer (yet?) who can explain the science behind the impact of weather – hot and humid today – but there’s must be a correlation. Tomorrow’s forecast is not quite as hot and humid, so likely the distance will approach more normal numbers, but I’ll be checking!
