Meandering Thoughts #34

Did Star Trek – intentionally or not – create the Borg phrase Resistance is futile from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Vogons?

Compare and contrast:

“Resistance is useless!” shouted the Vogon guard back at him. It was the first phrase he’d learn when he joined the Vogon Guard Corp.

Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, p47

We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.

Star Trek: First Contact, 1996

Dictionary.com defines futile as incapable of producing any result; ineffective; useless; not successful. Therefore, the phrases are identical.

And that’s where the similarities end. And remember, do not listen to any Vogon poetry.
