Random Learnings #55

Many (most?) newspapers have soft paywalls that allows you to read a few articles before require you to subscribe. My local newspaper, the Minnesota Star-Tribune, is no different: the headline and opening paragraphs are visible, but a <Page-Down> stops you from seeing anything. This is most frustrating for news sites that you don’t regularly visit and are definitely not planning to subscribe.

There are work-arounds: new private tab, Speedreader mode, vertical monitor and smaller font. Definitely extra effort, but necessary when you don’t see the value in a subscription.

[For the record, I have a New York Times subscription, but Speedreader mode does bypass its request for free signup.. I have not had a Star Tribute subscription in decades, it’s just not that good.]

I just found a new work-around, at least for the Star Tribune: before scrolling down and triggering the paywall, print the article to a PDF and then open the PDF. Voila, complete article now available. Any web search provides different solutions, much to the chagrin of these sites, but this one’s new in my books.
