Today I needed to go to the First National Bank Building in downtown St. Paul, MN for a personal appointment. The external cladding of the north entrance I used screams 1970s, totally disabused as I walked to the tower itself.
The building is in fact of a 1930’s art deco architecture, immediately apparent when you enter the tower itself and arrive at the elevators. Definitely old-school. Plenty of marble. Unusual designs for the elevator doors. Unique moldings. Overall very stylish, and I had no idea!
The building is primarily known for its rooftop 1st Sign. The building is part of a portfolio being sold, indicative of the tough commercial real estate market. After exiting the elevator on the 6th floor, I noticed how the hallways and offices appeared worn, tired, and unimproved, likely because the current owners do not want to further invest.
I unfortunately did not have time to dawdle and explore, but should be added to my To-do list!
