Ghosts of Radio Shack

After its 2015 and 2017 Chapter 11 bankruptcies and the sale of its intellectual property in November 2020, Radio Shack today is strictly an online retailer. Innumerable articles attempt to explain how Radio Shack strayed from their vision and went under. From its peak of over 7000 physical stores to business school case study, Radio Shack went down hard.

Debt financing agreements supposedly prevented closing underperforming stores, though lack of cash has also been cited: limited options available to management, losses compounding more losses, a clusterfuck from end-to-end.

Though Radio Shack stores do exist, this Clinton, IA location apparently closed in mid-2017, very likely with no funds allocated to taking down their signage (and, surprisingly, no one stealing it either). So if you’re driving the Lincoln Highway through Clinton, don’t get too excited: it’s only a reminder of what was and what will never be again.
